Synopsis
In a small upstate New York town during the summer of 1969, a curmudgeonly deli owner named Abel Shaddick finds his mundane life turned upside down when his slacker nephew, Stanley, secretly agrees to host a city kid for the summer as part of a charity program. Enter Herman Washington, a bright but needy young boy from the city, who arrives with dreams that clash sharply against Abel's grumpy disposition. What begins as a reluctant cohabitation between the cantankerous uncle and the hopeful child evolves into a poignant exploration of family, acceptance, and the transformative power of kindness. As tensions rise and misunderstandings abound, the film tenderly reveals the complexities of human connection. Abel's gruff exterior masks a deep-seated loneliness, while Herman's infectious optimism challenges the elder's worldview. This heartfelt drama, infused with moments of humor and warmth, invites viewers to reflect on the importance of community and the unexpected bonds that can form when barriers are broken down. With a stellar performance from the lead cast and a narrative that deftly balances humor and sentiment, this film is a compelling reminder of how a single summer can change lives forever.
