In 2021, Smit-McPhee garnered critical acclaim for his performance as Peter Gordon in Jane Campion's western film The Power of the Dog, for which he earned nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
